Construction of the General Hospital of Lyxouri (Cefalonia) “Mantzavinateio” began in 1937 and completed in 1957. The erection of the building paused before World War II and the structural system remained “bare“ till 1952.
Evaluation and Seismic Retrofit of the existing Hospital were designed by EBLECTON according to the recent (2012) Greek Code for Structural Interventions and the relevant part 3 of Eurocode 8.
The knowledge level was upgraded: building and material properties (geometry, reinforcement and detailing, corrosion, strength, etc.) were supplemented by material tests and assessments.
Nonlinear methods of Analysis (mainly of pushover type) were performed for various retrofitting strategies (reduction of seismic action effects, upgrading of member capacities, etc.) and the below retrofitting techniques were designed via optimization:
- New braced steel frames at the perimeter of the building with deep foundation (RC piles)
- CFRP-wrapping
- Methods for corrosion protection
